REVIEW #9 – I have dealt with Merrion Gold on a few occasions in 2021. The service is a professional one, aimed towards a premium market. I have interacted mainly with David Higgins, Head of Trading. David is clearly a professional who responds quickly to queries with detailed and relevant information.
I have mainly been interested in gold bullion coins. David has guided me towards coins which have the lowest premiums and highest re-sale value as my main interest in bullion is from the perspective of an inflationary hedge.
Coins that I have purchased have ranged in premiums from 2% to 7.5% above spot price. My understanding is that the global average premium for bullion is approximately 5%. The slightly more expensive premiums at Merrion Gold in 2021 seem to reflect pandemic-related supply chain issues as well as civil unrest in certain mining territories.
I understand that Merrion Gold offer a buy-back scheme, where gold is re-purchased at spot price minus 2%. I am informed that this buy-back premium can vary in percentage depending on supply and demand pressures.
If you subscribe to the services mailing list, special offers on bullion coins and bars are available. Some of these offer exceptionally good value for money in terms of premiums from what I can tell.
In terms of the quality of the coins, there have been minimal issues. I attach for the review a picture of one gold Maple Leaf coin which had a scuff mark on purchase. I understand this would be of negligible importance for my purposes, but may be problematic for coin collectors with a numismatic interest. I have no doubt that Merrion Gold would exchange this coin if I had a problem with it. I also attach for the review macro photography of other recently purchased coins to highlight coin quality for the detail-focussed investor.
My most recent purchases have included hard plastic coin cases, which is commendable, given the low hardness and susceptibility to damage that all high purity bullion is subject to.
In terms of the vaults themselves, I see great attention to detail in terms of security. I am aware the calibre of security here is on par with similar services available in the States. The vault is situated in an inconspicuous, affluent and safe neighbourhood in Dublin.
I would recommend Merrion Gold for those interested in bullion. – David McReynolds
